We Know Sauna Power - Inside and Out
Saunas require precise electrical planning and expert installation. From dedicated circuits and proper load calculations to panel upgrades and heater connections, every detail matters. Unlike a generalist electrician who might wire a sauna once a year, our team has built deep expertise in sauna electrical requirements across every type - traditional Finnish, infrared, steam, indoor, and outdoor.
Homeowners trust us. But so do sauna suppliers and installation companies across the GTA who need a reliable, knowledgeable electrical partner they can count on to show up, do it right, and make their customers happy. If you're a sauna builder or supplier looking for a preferred electrical installer to refer your clients to, we'd love to talk.
Traditional Finnish / Electric Sauna
The most common residential sauna in Ontario. A traditional electric sauna uses a rock heater (kiuas) powered by a dedicated 240V circuit. Heater sizes range from 3kW for small 2-person saunas to 12kW+ for larger rooms. Getting the circuit sizing right is critical - too small and the breaker trips; incorrectly installed and the heater warranty is void.
Typical voltage: 240V
Typical amperage: 20 – 60A depending on heater size
Permit required: Yes - ESA
Indoor & outdoor: Both supported
Steam Room
/ Steam Sauna
Steam rooms combine moisture and high heat - one of the most demanding environments for electrical work. Steam generators require dedicated 240V circuits with proper GFCI protection and moisture-rated components throughout. All wiring, boxes, and devices must be rated for wet locations. This is not a job for a generalist - moisture intrusion from improperly rated components can cause fires and equipment failure.
Typical voltage: 240V
GFCI required: Yes - wet location
Permit required: Yes — ESA
Components: Must be moisture-rated
Infrared Sauna
Infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures than traditional saunas and typically require less power - many smaller units plug into a standard 120V outlet. However, larger or commercial-grade infrared saunas require a dedicated 240V circuit. We assess your specific unit's requirements and install accordingly, ensuring the wiring matches the heater's load profile exactly.
Typical voltage: 120V or 240V
Typical amperage: 15 – 30A
Permit required: Yes if a new circuit is needed
Installation type: Usually simpler, faster
Outdoor Sauna
/ Barrel Sauna
Outdoor saunas and barrel saunas are increasingly popular across Southern Ontario - but they introduce additional complexity. The electrical feed must be buried or run in weatherproof conduit from the main panel to an outdoor sub-panel or disconnect at the sauna. All outdoor components must be rated for wet and cold Canadian climates, and the run distance often requires wire gauge upgrades to account for voltage drop.
Feed method: Underground or conduit run
Sub-panel: Often required at sauna
Permit required: Yes — ESA
Components: Outdoor/weatherproof rated
Everything Your Sauna Electrical Installation Requires
Sauna electrical work involves more than just running a wire to a heater. Here's the full scope of what Redding Electric handles on every sauna installation:
Dedicated Circuit Installation
Every sauna heater requires its own dedicated circuit run from your electrical panel - no shared circuits. We size the wire, breaker, and conduit correctly for your specific heater model
Control
Wiring
Wiring of sauna controls, thermostats, timers, and wall-mounted controllers. Whether your sauna uses a traditional dial control or a digital smart control panel, we wire it correctly and cleanly.
Sub-Panel Installation
Outdoor or detached saunas often benefit from a small sub-panel at the sauna building - cleaner, more flexible, and easier for future additions like lighting or outlets. We install and connect sub-panels where needed.
Load Calculations
We calculate the exact amperage draw of your sauna heater and verify your panel has capacity to add the load safely. If a panel upgrade is needed, we'll tell you upfront.
GFCI
Protection
Ground fault circuit interrupter protection is required in sauna environments - especially steam rooms and outdoor installations. We install the correct GFCI devices and verify they function properly before handoff.
Sauna
Lighting
Sauna lighting requires fixtures specifically rated for high-heat environments. We source and install heat-rated sauna lighting fixtures - no standard LED pot lights that will fail in weeks from the heat.
Heater Connection
Safe, manufacturer-compliant connection of your sauna heater to the dedicated circuit - following the specific wiring diagram for your unit to preserve warranty and ensure code compliance.
Outdoor Weatherproofing
For outdoor saunas, all conduit entries, junction boxes, and outlets are sealed and rated for outdoor/wet locations. We bury or protect the feed cable to Canadian climate standards.
ESA Permit & Inspection
Every sauna installation requires an ESA permit in Ontario. We handle the application, coordinate the inspection, and provide you the certificate - required for insurance and any future property sale.

Your comfort matters. Your safety matters more.
Saunas combine heat, moisture, and electricity - and that's not something you leave to chance or an electrician who's never wired one before.
Clean, Aesthetic Workmanship That Matches Your Sauna
A beautifully crafted sauna deserves electrical work that complements it. We believe great electrical work should be both functional and visually refined - no messy wiring, no surface-run cables, no shortcuts.
Clean Routing: Wiring is routed through walls and ceilings cleanly, with proper protection and zero exposed cable runs where they're not appropriate. Your sauna looks finished - not wired by someone in a hurry.
Attention to Detail: Every connection, every conduit run, every device placement is thought through. We consider aesthetics alongside function - because your sauna is a wellness investment, not a utility room.
Builder Coordination: We work seamlessly with your sauna builder or supplier, coordinating rough-in timing and final connections so the electrical never holds up the build. Sauna builders refer us because we make them look good too.
